My creative...um, mess

I awoke this morning feeling a little more motivated than the past few days, so I headed into the studio (aka the front room) early this morning only to be overwhelmed by the mess caused by week of me dumping stuff on the floor, table and any other available surface. I can't work in clutter. I'm one of those people who likes clean up as they go. I need things to be calm and tidy around me to settle in and get creative.

I just stopped writing this post to vacuum the carpet in here- it was really annoying me! Ahhh...that's better. Now, where was I? Oh, yes, clutter. So I've had a bit of a mad tidy this morning. To me it still looks messy. I have a small house and an ever expanding collection of fabrics, market props and 'stuff'. Every now and then I have a massive clean up and throw out (my disposal method is to put anything of use outside my house with a 'free to good home' sign. It's an effective method- the items are usually gone within a few hours. Saves me a trip to the tip shop or salvos and is good for the environment.)

Nonetheless, I always end up with another mess. I like to think of my self as organised, so it annoys me that the studio only stays neat for a few days. I don't think the fault lays with me, I think I just need more room. My house is co-joined and for some time I've been threatening to knock down a wall or two and take over next doors space. I think the easiest way to get through would be via the fireplaces...knock through a few bricks here and there and there you have it- instant storage space! Easy peasy. Does anyone have a hammer I can borrow?

i read your post, and all i can remember is free stuff, so do you have a particular day of the week that it happens, so i can 'pop' by!?
no, please just kidding, i am constantly up at the vinnies bin, dumping my clean unwantables in there!
I always find it interesting knowing how people work in their 'spaces'.
One day i may be brave enough to show the world mine!

We have the same fabrics (the red line houses) as one of our inspiring board, Rosie! :)

It's amazing how the "to dos" can stop our creativity out right. Hope the cleaning up helped!

Desperately in need of a major studio overall. I cannot show pictures because it is just tooooo embarrasing. But would love to see your fabric stash - do you have a genius solution for storing fabric? If so, please share!

Looks like you did a great job at cleaning up! You even gave me an idea on how I can sort my buttons! I have them all in a massive jar that isn't very helpful when I go to look for a particular one.

We used to live in an area of Melbourne where the free stuff idea was a happening thing. lots of couches and fridges. I know what you mean about having a clean space to work in, it does help! I wish I could organise it so that my creative space was uncluttered but it's a work in progress at the moment. Love the buttons xo

I can totally relate! We have a very small house and my creative space is a desk in our living room, that is always overflowing with tons of bins of fabrics.

A more logical person would not buy as many fabrics, but I am not that person. :)

Not buy fabrics? Are you mad? If it came down to it, I might buy fabrics over food :)

I'm the same, can't start anything until everything else is in order! I'm constantly tidying up as I go. Love your fabrics, the colours look great & your work space looks like a very neat & productive little spot.

funny how craft seems to take over your life and your house. we could all use more space but lets be honest we would just fill it up. i have taken the pledge to not buy another piece of fabric until i work through half of the stash. it won't last!

I have the same problem with keeping things neat after spending days making them that way.. That, and I can't find a thing after it is in its "assigned" spot.. "creative neatening" I like to call it. Looks like you have done a very nice job, congrats..
