I'm off to Melbourne again this weekend to attend the North Melbourne Market. 'Oh no' exclaims my bank account, 'not again!'. Yep, this time I'll have three days. I'm planning a trip to Ikea on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday the market will run from 10-2 at the Lithuanian Club in Errol Street (I'll be in the foyer), so Sunday afternoon will probably be spent in the city (Myer here I come...again. Hobart's Myer burnt down a few years ago and it has not been re-built. It's now about 1/4 of the original size and not very exciting). Monday is where I need your help. For a few months now I've been meaning to get out to both Hawthorn and Northcote, but being unfamiliar with the area I'm not sure where the best shops are. I'm looking for independent handmade/gift stores, thrift stores and anything fabric related. DO any of you lovely Melbourne ladies have any suggestions?

Can't help you with Monday... but GOOD LUCK and have lot's of fun at the North Melbourne Market.
Shame it wasn't last weekend, as I was in Melbourne then, and could have stopped by to cover for you when you wanted to have a good look at the other wares for sale...
ALSO I had an idea for mobile display's. Will talk to you again soon!!
Definitely Northcote! There is a great fabric store on High Street (mostly vintage) plus a few good op shops and lots of great design related stores. Faves are The Local Shop and I Dream a Highway. If you have time I'd also check out Smith Street in Collingwood (towards Gertrude Street) and also along Gertrude Street. They are not far apart. I'll try to visit your stall on Sunday if I can get away from mine!
And on a little street off Smith Street is the best cafe in the world, Cafe Rosamund. Their mandarin juice is super yummy :)
Northcote! Just get the 86 tram, it goes along gertrude, turns into smith st. lots of great shops. then it chugs along until it gets to queens parade, which is still fitzroy. there are more nice shops there too. Then it chugs along some more, until it gets to northcote! then thornbury!
see you sunday!! xx
Have a fantastic market. I admire your anticipated energy levels for the trip and wish i had them! I'm unable to advise about those areas but it sounds like you've been given a few pointers. Safe trip!
Good luck with the Market, I second and third Northcote. I bought my politically incorrect Fox Brooch (for Taswegians) in a lovely shop in Northcote. The Local was also filled to the brim with handmade loveliness! Also further up was a really nice retro fabric shop. Have a fun time.
cheers, girls! Off to Northcote it is.
Definitely High St Northcote - Local Shop, I Dream a Highway, Dear Gladys. Check out Sydney Rd Brunswick for Olive Grove, and heaps of fabric shops too.
